Use of the family printer to output digital
photographs is one of the fastest growing applications in homes with teenage PC
users in 2003. With the digital camera closing in fast on film cameras, the home
printer is quickly emerging as the virtual darkroom of the 21st century.
Accompanying that trend is the latest research from MetaFacts, Inc. which
indicates that photo printing has become one of the most popular uses of the
family printer, particularly in homes with teens between the ages of 13-19.
According to the research, use of the family
printer to output photos jumped 23% over 2002 in homes with teen PC users (28.5%
in 2002 vs. 35.0% in 2003). The data behind this rising trend is based on a
survey of 11,175 respondents to the 2003 edition of Technology User Profile. In
this case, home PC users were asked to select all activities for which they use
their printer (at least occasionally). In homes with teen PC users, printing
photos moved into the number seven slot on the list in 2003, up from number
eight in 2002.
Other printer activities showing strong interest
in 2003 in homes with teen PC users included: Greeting Cards (43.9%),
Newsletters/Flyers/Brochures (28.2%), and Signs/Banners (26.4%).

What's ahead? |
|
And which printer manufacturer stands the best
chance to benefit from sales of aftermarket add-on supplies such as ink/toner
cartridges and special photo paper? Hewlett-Packard. HP-branded printers
dominate the home photo printer market by 3 to 1 over the next highest
competitor. The top three brands of photo printers in the home are HP with 50%
market share, Epson with 17.5% market share and Lexmark with 16.6% market share.
Printing photos will continue to be a high
priority as the population of digital camera owners increases and demand easier,
less-costly output options. As manufacturers ready printers with higher photo
quality output, and possibly oriented towards the needs of teens, 2004 should be
an exciting year for the home photo printing market. |
