Mostly Flat, with a Few Bumps – MetaFacts TUPdate #030422
Dan Ness, Principal Analyst, MetaFacts, April 22, 2003

Executive Summary

Mostly Flat, with a Few Bumps

Only a few short years ago, news of flat-line market penetration was unthinkable in the tech community. Now, it’s looked at as good news simply because it is not bad news: large groups of users aren’t giving up on computers, the Internet, cellphones, PDAs and other technology products and services. Indeed, some pockets of growth continue, even while others decline and some never seem to grow.

We’re beginning to analyze the results of the 2003 Annual Edition of Technology User Profile, and the 24,713 surveys are confirming what we’re all feeling in some way, yet with a few surprises.

The most important early findings from the preliminary results:

• The percent of U.S. Adults with access to a PC has remained absolutely unchanged from a year ago
• Home PC usage has continued to rise, if ever so slightly
• Slightly fewer adults are using computers in the workplace
• Nearly four in ten (38%) American Adults don’t have access to a PC
• PC buying plans are at their lowest point in years
• Cellphone penetration is growing, but still lags behind PC usage
• Dial-up modem Internet access, though shrinking, still outnumbers high-bandwidth usage
• Digital Camera penetration is still hot, if slightly cooling
• PDA penetration has slowed
